A full day rafting trip with Mountain Whitewater Descents will allow scouts to complete many requirements for their Whitewater Merit Badge

Mountain Whitewater Descents is proud to help Boy Scouts obtain their Whitewater Merit Badge. The requirements are as follows:
1. Show that you know first aid for injuries and illnesses including hypothermia, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, dehydration, sunburn, insect stings, tick bites, etc.
2. A) Identify conditions for performing CPR
B) Demonstrate proper technique for performing CPR
3. Earn the Canoeing badge then do the following:
A) Complete the Scout Gate Test within 120 seconds
B) Demonstrate your understanding of BSA Safety Afloat and American Whitewater Affiliation Safety Code
4. Identify and explain the use of safety equipment on running water
5. Explain the International Scale of River Difficulty and apply the scale to the section of river where you will practice and demonstrate your whitewater skills
6. Explain how to scout and read a river both while afloat and from ashore
7. Explain the difference between flatwater and whitewater canoes
8. Identify paddles designed for whitewater use and explain their special characteristics
9. Do ONE of the following:
A) Demonstrate paddle strokes in the bow position of an open canoe on running water
B) Demonstrate forward, backward and sideways movement on running water
10. While paddling demonstrate forward and back ferry, eddy turn, peeling out of an eddy, and high and low braces
11. Explain and demonstrate:
A) Self-rescue and procedures when capsized in running water
B) Safe rescue of others in various whitewater situations
C) Portaging—when and how to do it
D) The whitewater buddy system using at least three people and three crafts
12. Discuss the use of inflatable boats on moving water
13. Explain the risks of “tubing” on running water
14. Participate in a one-day raft trip for beginners
Mountain Whitewater Descents can help the boys fulfill requirements 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,11,12,13,14
That leaves requirements 3,9, and 10 for the boys to complete elsewhere.
We use paddleboats kayaks along with the highest quality gear and equipment in order to complete the requirements. We will have a special class after the trip going over all the highlights. Bring your blue card and our Boy Scout Counselers will sign off most of your requirements.
